- If you are at fault for causing the accident, your liability insurance only covers the personal injuries of people in the other car(s). There is no coverage of medical bills for you or your passengers
- Medical bills can be covered if you get additional insurance for Medical Payments Coverage called MedPay
- An alternative is Personal Injury Protection (PIP) insurance to pay your medical bills resulting from the accident
What if I have medical bills resulting from the accident? One option is called Medical Payments Coverage, also known as MedPay. Our Progressive Insurance Review discusses the options for additional coverage that pay medical bills from an accident.
If offered in your state, it might also be a good idea to consider getting Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and uninsured/underinsured motorist (UIM) coverage. Depending on the specifics of a car accident, PIP and UIM insurance may also help pay medical bills.
Progressive Medical Payments (MedPay) Coverage
Medical payments (MedPay) coverage is optional insurance available as part of full coverage car insurance in some states. Adding MedPay to your Progressive auto insurance policy pays medical costs for you and your passengers if they experience any injuries in a covered auto accident.
MedPay limits range from $1,000 to $10,000. We recommend picking limits that match the amount of your health insurance deductible since MedPay covers this and other out-of-pocket costs not covered by health insurance, like dental work and physical therapy.
It also covers the cost of an ambulance, emergency room visits, doctors, a stay in the hospital, nurses, and treatments for your injuries. MedPay does not cover lost wages or household costs. For that, you need personal injury protection (PIP).

Personal Injury Protection (PIP) from Progressive for Medical Bills
PIP is also called “no-fault” insurance and is required in most no-fault states. In others, PIP is optional. PIP and MedPay are similar, but PIP covers more things, including lost wages. It also covers any injuries if you are hit by a car as a pedestrian or when riding a bicycle.
PIP pays no matter who is at fault but also has a deductible. Progressive ranks as one of the best personal injury protection (PIP) car insurance companies, but compare policies from multiple companies to find the right deductible for you.
What Progressive PIP Insurance Covers
Here are some examples of what Progressive PIP insurance covers:
- Medical and hospital bills from a personal injury caused by a car accident
- Lost wages for the time taken off from work
- Rehabilitation to help you recover
- Childcare if you cannot take care of your children
- Funerals if someone dies in the car crash
Remember, no-fault states require PIP or MedPay to cover medical bills for any injuries from an auto accident, so check with your agent to ensure you have the proper coverage.

Progressive Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage for Medical Bills
In addition to Medpay or PIP, you should consider getting uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) coverage. Getting UIM from Progressive helps avoid being in a car accident without sufficient insurance protection.
Did you know that one in eight drivers is uninsured? UIM covers your damages caused by an uninsured or underinsured driver that can cover all your medical bills. UIM coverage may also cover vehicle damage in some states.
Compare rates from best uninsured motorist (UM) coverage car insurance companies to find the most affordable UM/UIM coverage in your state.
How to Get Progressive to Cover Medical Bills Resulting From an Accident
To have full insurance protection from Progressive, you want liability, collision, and comprehensive coverage. You also want to add Medical Payments (MedPay) Coverage or Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage to ensure Progressive covers medical bills after an accident. Frequently Asked Questions
Which is the better choice, MedPay or PIP?
MedPay and PIP are both good but may not be offered in all states. If both are offered, you usually choose one. Progressive’s MedPay does not have a deductible and provides more coverage for passengers’ injuries. PIP covers more expenses but has a deductible.
Do PIP and MedPay pay before my health care?
PIP and MedPay coverage are both primary coverage for medical bills. They may pay medical bills before health insurance pays them.
What if I am injured while in another car?
MedPay and PIP cover medical bills for injuries from being in another car that has an accident.
